Apr 25, 2018 New to ds2. Any spell worth to use? I've seen some youtube playthrough making boss way easier with spells than melee attack.

Mar 23, 2014 Magic is very clunky in the Souls games. Most spells involve a stationary caster. You should be able to move while casting some spells: e.g. a dashing Dark Greatsword. There should be certain types of spells that can be combined into more fluid mechanics with movements. Darks Souls 2 actually has the jack-of-all-trades build, it's called 'mundane', you can google it for reference but you need at least level 150 to make it reasonably good. Until then I suggest a STR build with some investment in attunement and faith for some healing and buffs. In order to have all three available, you would normally need 20 ATN (one spell slot being gained at 10, 13, 16 and 20 ATN - note that RL takes 2 slots). Instead, what I do is have my ATN at 16 and wear the Southern Ritual Band.

Other Souls game didn't treat magic with such prominence as DkS2 did. First of all, ATN is a very powerful stat. Not only it gives more spell slots & more spell charges, it also gives faster casting speed and Agility on the side. That's really awesome for any spell casters. Second, elemental infused weapons can be buffed with spells.
